Precedent

IT Support for Wellington Government Consultancies and Contractors

Government agencies expect their suppliers to look after official information properly. Before a contract is signed, consultancies are often asked to complete a security questionnaire, show how devices are protected and explain where client data is stored. Precedent puts those controls in place and keeps the evidence ready, so winning work isn’t held up by IT.

We support policy advisers, management consultancies, researchers, evaluators and specialist contractors across the region, including Wellington City, the Hutt Valley, Porirua, Kāpiti and Wairarapa.

Systems we work alongside

Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace; guest access to agency Teams and SharePoint sites; secure file sharing; survey and research tools; analysis software such as NVivo, Stata and R; time recording and project tools; Xero.

Meeting agency expectations

Agencies follow the Protective Security Requirements and the New Zealand Information Security Manual, and these expectations flow through to suppliers in contracts and questionnaires. We set up multi-factor sign-in, encrypted devices, regular updates, logging and backups, and document them in a form you can hand to a client.

What’s included

  • Security evidence: Controls documented so supplier questionnaires and panel applications can be answered quickly
  • Secure collaboration: Guest access to agency workspaces, secure file sharing, and email protection agencies check for
  • Data location: Client information stored in New Zealand or Australia where your contracts require it
  • Associates and contractors: Access set up and removed quickly, limited to the projects each person works on
  • Incident response: A clear plan for what happens if something goes wrong, including when to tell your agency clients

This sits on top of our core managed IT service, tailored to your organisation.

Business-hours support, Monday to Friday 08:30–17:00, with after-hours cover arranged for managed service clients when you need it.

Where AI can help

  • Document review: Summaries of long reports, legislation and background papers to speed up research
  • Submissions analysis: Themes and quotes drawn out of large sets of consultation submissions, with your analysts checking the results
  • Drafting: First drafts of briefings, reports and slides in your house style
  • Meeting notes: Notes and action lists from workshops and client meetings

Many agencies now set rules about how suppliers use AI. We set up approved tools such as Microsoft 365 Copilot, Gemini, ChatGPT or Claude on business plans that don’t train on your data, keep official information out of public AI tools, help you follow each client’s rules, and make sure a person reviews everything before it’s delivered. First step: a supplier security review

We check your setup against what agencies typically ask of suppliers, fix the gaps in priority order, and give you documented answers you can reuse.

Common questions

Can you help us complete a security questionnaire?
Yes. We work through it with you, answer the technical questions, and fix anything that would otherwise be a “no”.

Do you look after classified systems?
No. Classified systems are provided and managed by the agency. We look after your own business systems and the information you handle on them.
