Cyber Security for Small Business

Cyber security · Small business

Most cyber attacks on small businesses aren’t sophisticated. They rely on stolen passwords, unpatched software, and staff who have never been shown what a phishing email looks like. A handful of basics, done consistently, stops most of them.

Precedent helps Wellington small and medium businesses put those basics in place and keep them there, following the fundamentals recommended by New Zealand’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC).

What we do

The fundamentals we put in place

  • Multi-factor authentication (MFA): We turn on MFA for email, Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace, remote access and other key accounts, so a stolen password alone isn’t enough to get in.
  • Keeping software updated: We patch operating systems, applications and network devices on a schedule, and flag equipment that no longer receives security updates.
  • Tested backups: We back up your important data, keep a copy separate from your main systems, and test restores regularly, so you can recover from ransomware or an honest mistake.
  • Staff awareness: We help your team recognise phishing and scams, and make it easy to report anything suspicious.

How we work with you

We start by reviewing your current setup and give you a short, plain-English list of what to fix first. For a deeper look, we offer security assessments and penetration testing. From there we tailor ongoing security to your business, ideally as part of a managed service so the protections stay in place instead of slipping over time.
